yes the sound is off and its annoying me
And yup, Sylar's original power is 'Intuitive Adaptation' to give it its fancy name, which basically means that he has the innate ability to know and see how things work, as others have said. Thus he simply saws of the top of the persons head, examines their brain and voila he has their power. Its why he hears all the mechanisms in clocks and was such a good watchmaker/repairer.

Sylar IS special. He has the ability to see how things work, which is why he is able to use people's abilities after he sees how their brain works.
And Sylar never took the formula Mohinder took, he took a mixture of Clair's and Suresh' blood which cured him of his mutated strain of the Shanti virus, which was what stopped him from having his abilities.
Just seeing how things work isn't enough to grant someone abilities. Sylar has the same ability Peter has: empathic mimicry. He absorbs people's powers by putting himself into their shoes. Then he uses his other ability, intuitive application, to control those powers faster than the host normally could.
Actually, it's not exactly empathic mimicry. It's similar to it, but not really. Peter can absorb powers by just standing next to the person, hence empathic. But Sylar needs to actually observe how the brain works, and what it does to "create" the power. He then has his brain do the same. As Sylar's actual ability is to see how things work in detail, he is able to do this.
It's because he stole Claire's healing powers.

The future one has a scar on the face. And he has his hair gelded and you can see the difference.
Plus when he's around Angela (Peter's Mom), she tells him to go back,etc.

The show doesn't have any holes in it. Maybe you're just not smart enough to understand it fully. And Sylar didn't MAKE himself special.
"Kenish" was almost right about Sylar.
Sylars original ability does, that once he has found something that interrests him, HE CAN'T STOP, until he knows HOW it works..
You must of not been paying attention. It's not a hole. Sylar has an ability. It's the ability to use the abilities of whatever person he kills.

Sylar has to kill a person in order to take their ability, only Claire can't die as she has the ability to heal. Suresh, being the geeky scientist, created his own abilities, it's like taking drugs, there are always side effects!! Peter's ability is to absorb powers from others, even though himself and Sylar have pretty much the same abilities, Peter uses them for 'the greater good', whereas Sylar is just evil.
As for Caitlin, we have to get to the future to find out what happened to her, so be patient people.
There are no holes in this season, fair enough it's slightly more complex than previous season's, but if it was the same it would be boring!! Imagine what season four is going to be like!!

He doesn't really "take" powers. He sees something in the brain and changes his own in some way with his original power. (His original power was to see in detail how things work by looking at the thing.)I don't know how that would let him change his own brain but he some how does.
(This is my own interpretation and is likely not right, don't hold it against me)
like a nathan and that other guy can fly, claire and adam can both heal, claires mom and that one other guy can make fire, isaac and this black guy can paint the future (should've at least tried to do some new way of telling it), etc...
because the reusing of the powers contribute to the story line. if they took precedence of presenting new powers over everything else the story would probably suck.
The thing is, if u watch closly, Sylar's MAIN gifted power was the understanding of things, so inside the brain he understands it and takes on that ability.
and i feel bad for him, too :L
