Okay, allow me to clear some things up. For your point, I guess it's the same as to why cats purr. Nobody knows, and it doesn't really matter.
And to the idiots above me, John Locke doesn't become the smoke monster, the smoke monster takes his likeness after he died and came to the island. Locke has always been Locke. The smoke monster took his form in season 5. Also, way to spoil things for those of us that aren't here to rewatch the series all over again. Next time, post a spoiler alert, especially if you're going to explain things you don't understand yourself.
